We Hung Up the Gloves, But the Impact Remains

Some businesses are created simply to generate profit.

This one was created to build community.

What began as iLoveKickboxing - Harlem eventually evolved into Fit Theorem - Harlem and later Harlem Rise Fitness — not because we were chasing trends, but because we were constantly trying to adapt, survive, and continue serving Harlem in a changing world.

For years, we poured everything we had into creating a place where people could become stronger physically and mentally. A place where stress could be released on heavy bags, confidence could be rebuilt through discipline, and strangers could become friends, training partners, and family.

But behind the energy of every class was a reality most people never saw.

Long before the pandemic, operating a boutique fitness studio in Harlem was already challenging. Every opportunity to finally reach profitability seemed to be met with another major obstacle: rising rent, increasing insurance costs, expensive equipment replacements, HVAC breakdowns, studio repairs, maintenance issues, operational expenses, staffing costs, technology costs, debt obligations, and the constant pressure of keeping a small independent fitness business alive in New York City.

Then the pandemic arrived.

Like many small businesses, we were forced to close our doors for nearly six months while still paying rent and ongoing expenses with little to no incoming revenue. When we reopened, we faced more than nine months of restrictions and limited class capacities that made recovery nearly impossible for a group fitness business built on community and energy.

At the same time, advertising and client acquisition costs increased dramatically. Reaching new potential members became more expensive year after year, while converting leads into long-term memberships became increasingly difficult in a changing fitness landscape. Competition grew rapidly across the industry as large gyms, luxury fitness concepts, online fitness platforms, and national chains fought for the same audience.

The Harlem community itself was also changing. Demographic shifts, economic pressures, and post-pandemic lifestyle changes affected how people approached fitness, spending, commuting, and memberships. The environment that once allowed boutique community gyms to thrive became increasingly difficult to sustain.

Still, we kept going.

Not because it was profitable.
Not because it was easy.
But because people depended on it.

One of the greatest responsibilities we carried was trying to continue supporting our instructors through declining revenues and uncertain times. These were talented individuals who gave their energy, passion, motivation, and heart to every class. They inspired members through difficult workouts and difficult periods in life, often while facing their own personal and financial challenges outside the studio.

We continued operating because we believed what was happening inside those walls mattered.

Members came to us to lose weight, relieve stress, overcome anxiety, build confidence, improve their health, and feel connected to something positive. Through kickboxing classes, transformation challenges, kettlebell training, yoga, Muay Thai, self-defense, sweat, and perseverance, lives changed in ways that could never be measured financially.

There were many moments when closing would have been the easier decision.

But we stayed open while losing money because we knew people needed community. We knew people needed movement, encouragement, accountability, and human connection during some of the hardest years many had ever experienced.

Our final day of classes at 47 W 116th St, New York, NY 10026, was Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

While the business has permanently closed, what was built inside that studio will always matter. The friendships formed, confidence gained, weight lost, fears overcome, tears shed, victories celebrated, and memories created can never be taken away.

To every member who walked through our doors.
To every instructor who inspired others through their passion and energy.
To every person who supported a small Harlem fitness business through difficult times.

Thank you.

Thank you for believing in us.
Thank you for growing with us.
Thank you for helping create something meaningful for Harlem.

We encourage everyone to continue prioritizing their health and wellness and to continue supporting local small businesses whenever possible. Independent businesses are often built through sacrifice, passion, and perseverance far beyond what people see publicly.

Though the studio doors have closed, the impact of this community will live on forever.

With gratitude,

Fit Theorem - Harlem
